2026 Zhushan (竹山) Bamboo Art Lantern Festival — Bamboo Art Welcomes Spring, Horses Leap in Zhushan
The 2026 Zhushan Bamboo Art Lantern Festival opens on December 31, 2025, and the exhibition lasts until March 7, 2026. Adults and children are welcome to visit the lantern festival.
The main lantern "Horse Leaps and Butterfly Dances" (馬躍蝶舞) of the 2026 Bamboo Art Lantern Festival is set up at the Zhushan Tobacco Factory (竹山菸葉館). It is sponsored by Zinan Temple (紫南宮) and handcrafted by bamboo art master Qiu Jin-duan (邱錦緞). It integrates various crafts using local materials from Zhushan to present the most local emotional artistic landscape.
Horses have symbolized wealth and power since ancient times and are also faithful partners in people's lives; they are steady, gentle, and can carry heavy loads, and are irreplaceable existences in production and travel. The cherished love for fine horses also reflects people's kindness and virtue.
This year's main lantern combines a traditional lantern frame with delicate bamboo weaving, elegantly outlining the posture and texture of the horse, as if it were about to leap out in the next second. The surrounding blooming flowers attract migrating Purple Crow Butterflies (紫斑蝶) to stop and linger. The butterfly wings use a velvet texture and are inlaid with colored glass hand-fired by teacher Lin Fang-shi (林芳仕). When the sunlight shines, the colors from light purple to bright blue are dreamlike, symbolizing Zhushan's intention to protect nature and cherish the land.
In the Zhushan Tobacco Factory lantern area, bamboo craftsmen from Zhushan and from Nantou and Miaoli have gone all out to create 26 exquisite works. Each one is lifelike, including cute horses, delicate horses, and heroic steeds that look like they are about to gallop in the next second... etc., each one is super eye-catching.
