2026 Zuozhen Lantern Festival (左鎮燈會): Based on Bamboo, Lighting up a Sustainable Future
At the end of 2023, the concept of the Zuozhen Lantern Festival was born, originating from the enthusiasm for Zuozhen's cultural heritage and tourism development by public sectors, local groups, and youth communities, who spontaneously organized the lantern festival. The first Zuozhen Lantern Festival in 2024 took the local material "bamboo" as its inspiration and planned nine exhibition areas, including the Flow of Brilliance, the Heart of Bamboo Forest, and the Wheel of Seasons. Each exhibition area showcases local culture and the characteristics of the chalk terrain, using this event to market Zuozhen's tourism resources. Although it started with limited resources, it successfully created the first major lantern festival in a hundred years through community co-creation and youth-elder cooperation, attracting over ten thousand people and lighting up the rural area.
In 2025, the Zuozhen Lantern Festival continued the three spirits of "Sustainability, Inheritance, and Co-creation". Through bamboo materials and artistic creation, residents continued to be the main protagonists of the stage. In the competitive environment of lantern festivals across Taiwan, it gradually formed the unique appearance of the "Bamboo Lantern Festival", opening a new opportunity for Taiwan's lantern festival culture and providing more exposure and performance possibilities for bamboo craftsmanship and local culture.
Entering 2026, we welcome the third year of the Zuozhen Lantern Festival. After the practice of the first two sessions, we deeply realized the resilience and uniqueness of Zuozhen's local culture. It is not only a tourism event but has also become an important stage for community cohesion, carrying culture, and performing crafts, insisting on leaving the stage to every local person—letting community residents, elders, youth, and groups find their own brilliance through bamboo creations.
The 2026 Zuozhen Lantern Festival will continue to use bamboo as its core, deepening the spirit of "Bamboo Craft Performance", allowing traditional skills and modern art to coexist and blend, and presenting the integrated cultural form through the lantern festival. We hope that such a "Bamboo Culture Stage" will not only continue to be a local feature of Tainan but also become a unique cultural symbol in Taiwan, letting bamboo craftsmanship and local stories bloom the power of generational inheritance in the interweaving of light and shadow.
