A Moment, A Journey: Special Exhibition of Stupas and Dharani Pillars in the Collection (一瞬一旅:館藏佛塔經幢特展)
"Life is like a journey, and I am also a traveler." Life is impermanent, like a moment in the universe, but every moment is a wonderful journey that cannot be repeated.
If life flows endlessly, where will we go after this period ends? In this journey of a moment, how can we grasp the present and say goodbye properly? Buddhism explains the interconnectedness and mutual influence between life and all things in the universe through "Dependent Origination," and the cycle of birth and death is like a rotation. Such a viewpoint permeates architecture and sculpture art. Whether it is a stupa (佛塔) symbolizing neither birth nor death, a stupa inscription (塔銘) recording the deeds of practitioners, or a dharani pillar (經幢) for the living and the dead to eliminate sins and increase blessings, they all show care and wisdom for life and contain rich cultural connotations.
This exhibition divides the collection of statues, stupa inscriptions, stupas, and dharani pillars into four units: 1. Dependent Origination of the Dharma Realm (法界緣起); 2. Remembrance in the World (銘記於世); 3. The Path of Eternity (永恆之道); 4. The Vow of Abiding (善住之願). With "the life education of the awakened" as the core, from "the relationship between life, death and the world" to "how to face the impermanence and nostalgia of life," then thinking about "whether there is an eternal existence in impermanence" and "how to grasp the present," explore the awakened person's understanding and practice of life, and how to transcend the shackles of life and death. We invite viewers to step into the ever-flowing world between stupas and dharani pillars, gaze at the ancient inscriptions, see how the ancients responded to life issues, and inspire reflection on ourselves - how to settle in the present world and live well in the future.
The exhibition combines handmade devices and situational experiences, along with diverse activities such as workshops and lectures, so that the audience can understand the history and aesthetics of stupas and dharani pillars through participation, and open a dialogue with life.
