“Between Harmony and Order” (《和序之間》) Chamber Music Series Concert II (Taichung 場)
Young violinists based in Germany, Ting-Shuo Chang (張庭碩) and Cheng-Hung Tsai (蔡承宏), have known each other for many years and have collaborated on stages across Europe and Taiwan, developing a deep friendship and rapport. Two years ago, they performed their first duo violin concert, which was widely acclaimed for its exquisite interpretation and vivid stage interaction. This year, they join forces again to present a concert with a richer and more diverse repertoire, showcasing the flexible and lively dialogue between two violins.
The repertoire for this concert spans the 19th and 20th centuries, presenting the diverse forms of the double violin ensemble across different eras. German violinist and composer Louis Spohr (1784–1859) composed several violin duos in the 1820s; nearly a century later, fellow violinist Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931) wrote the only sonata for two violins of his life. 20th-century composer Sergei Prokofiev's (1891–1953) Sonata for Two Violins is known for its distinct rhythm and novel style, and is still considered a classic of the double violin repertoire today. Italian composer Luciano Berio's (1925–2003) violin duos explore sound layers and performance techniques, expanding the possibilities of double violin expression beyond traditional classic repertoire.
Program
1. L. Spohr: Trois Duos Concertants, op. 67, no. 2
2. S. Prokofiev: Sonata for 2 Violins, op. 56
3. L. Berio: Duetti per due Violini (Selection)
4. E. Ysaÿe: Sonata for 2 Violins, op. posthume
