Bunun Traditional Ground Loom Weaving Course

Date: 2026-03-07 — 2026-08-22 Organizer: (中華民國)信義鄉原住民文化館
The Bunun people possess unique life rituals and traditional customs, having developed a rich and distinctive culture. Traditionally, Bunun weaving (matin-un) not only holds a significant position for female tribespeople but also deeply influences the daily life patterns of the group, becoming a symbol of ethnic identity. During the Japanese colonial period, weaving was prohibited. Today, facing changes in the cultural ecosystem, tribespeople no longer rely on self-weaving for clothing and bedding, causing the craft to face a crisis of extinction. As the cultural context of the tribe is at risk of breaking, preservation and maintenance measures are an urgent priority.
Eligibility: Residents registered in Xinyi Township who are passionate about and willing to learn traditional weaving.
Work and farm busy seasons have led to neglect of weaving, and various weaving techniques are becoming increasingly unfamiliar. Like learning the tribal language, it must start from daily life; it is indeed necessary to let weaving culture permeate daily existence.
1. Through hands-on operation, create a Bunun man's top.
2. Enhance the importance of traditional weaving for tribespeople within the township.
3. Increase the cultural identity of Xinyi Township residents and showcase the beauty of the culture.
Actual class hours must exceed 2/3 of the total course hours (115 hours) to receive a certificate of completion, deposit refund, and the finished work.
