Chen Cheng-po's (陳澄波) Taiwan Travelogue (臺灣紀行)
During the Japanese colonial period, the first generation of Western-style painters in Taiwan received modern art education and mastered the technique of "sketching from life" (寫生). With improvements in transportation, the range these painters could explore on the map became much wider than in the past. Consequently, they began moving around the island to find ideal painting subjects, and Chen Cheng-po (陳澄波) was part of this trend. How did his sketching trips unfold? What kind of scenery did he find among Taiwan's mountains, seas, cities, and villages?
