Classics · Crossing: Chen Hung-yao (經典・穿越 陳弘耀)
2025 marks the tenth anniversary of the passing of Taiwanese cartoonist Chen Hung-yao (陳弘耀, 1964–2015).
For many comic fans, his works accompanied their youth and shaped the way we understand the world.
Starting from Friday, December 5, the National Museum of Comics (國家漫畫博物館) will launch the "Classics · Crossing: Chen Hung-yao" special exhibition in Gallery 03 of the East Campus, inviting everyone to re-enter the world built by this creator who spanned comics, illustration, and video game design. This exhibition is a new extension of the "Freedom · Crossing: Chen Hung-yao" memorial exhibition held at the Taiwan Comic Base (臺北漫畫基地) in Taipei this year. Using "Classics" and "Crossing" as curatorial concepts, it looks back at Chen Hung-yao's life and creative trajectory. His painting style is delicate and diverse, blending the dynamism of Japanese manga with the literary temperament of European comics; he is also a "common growth memory" for many readers in the fields of comics, novels, and video games.
The exhibition specially replicates the small studio where the cartoonist drew his first long-form work "Great Journey to the West (大西遊)", recreating the daily scene where the story was born; it also gathers many precious original manuscripts for the first time, including "Red Fox (赤狐)" which amazed European publishers, the science fiction short story collection "Time Games (時間遊戲)", the color manuscripts of "One Sword (一刀傳)" which readers haven't forgotten for thirty years, and 1990s video game posters such as "Xuan-Yuan Sword II (軒轅劍貳)" and "The Butterfly Lovers (楓之舞)" that accompanied countless players' youth. Furthermore, the classic cover designs for the Traditional Chinese version of "Legend of the Galactic Heroes (銀河英雄傳說)" can also be seen.
