Coexisting with Bears—Formosan Black Bear (臺灣黑熊) Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-03-31 Organizer: (中華民國)內政部營建署玉山國家公園管理處
More than just a national treasure; they are a part of our shared life.
The Formosan Black Bear (臺灣黑熊) is Taiwan's only native bear and a rare protected species. In recent years, with the rise of environmental and ecological conservation awareness, they have frequently appeared in the public eye. People have begun to understand the survival pressures they face, including illegal hunting, accidental trapping, and human-bear conflicts at mountain lodges, though there are also heartwarming scenes of mother bears with cubs. Years of research and reporting show their activity in and around the Yushan (玉山) area, highlighting the importance of basic research and the effectiveness of National Park conservation efforts. For those walking in the Tataka (塔塔加) area, it is not impossible to encounter one—but are you truly prepared for the meeting?
To help the public better understand Taiwan's national treasure, the Yushan Administration cooperated with the Taiwan Black Bear Conservation Association to exhibit 1:1 life-sized statues, skulls, footprints, plant specimens used as food, hair samples, feces, and bite marks from research. There are also investigative equipment and bear-proofing devices on display. Coupled with a prize quiz, the exhibition leads visitors step-by-step from the bear's background to how we can coexist comfortably, providing a comprehensive understanding of these precious family members on Formosa.

Protecting them is protecting ourselves.
As indispensable large carnivores in the ecosystem's food chain, 80% of their diet comes from plants. Combined with their vast range, they are important dispersers for many plants and the soul of a healthy forest. As outdoor hiking becomes more popular and people enter the mountains, "coexisting with bears" and "coexisting with the environment" have become core conservation tasks for the Yushan Administration. The most central value is "Leave No Trace" (無痕山林), minimizing impact on the natural environment to live in harmony with all things. We hope this special exhibition conveys knowledge about black bears, coexistence, and Leave No Trace, showing that small changes in human behavior can contribute to protecting our home.
