Craft Taiwan: The Path to Sustainability
The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (國立臺灣工藝研究發展中心) has been established for over 70 years since Yen Shui-long founded the "Nantou County Craft Research Class" in 1954. Following the "Living Craft, Craft Life" concept proposed in 2024, the "Craft 70+1" was launched in 2025 to respond to future craft values from a new perspective. It advocates for "SLOHAS" (Slow + LOHAS), highlighting an attitude where "Craft is Slow Happiness and Life Matters."
"SLOHAS" is a local fusion of SLOW and LOHAS lifestyles, with core values including Simplicity, Lifestyle, Originality, Health, Aesthetics, and Sustainability. It emphasizes a "Good Craft" cycle of infinite sustainability between "S and S."
"Craft Taiwan - The Path to Sustainability" is based on the "SLOHAS" attitude. The exhibition of the Institute's historical context, titled "Craft Taiwan - The Path to Sustainability," is displayed on the 4th floor of the Craft Culture Gallery.
The exhibition presents the transformation of Taiwanese craft from tradition to the present on a timeline, further exploring how contemporary craft integrates sustainable development concepts. Starting from Yen Shui-long's "Taiwanese Craft," passing through different periods of craft development to today's "Craft Taiwan," it finds the intersection between history and innovation, analyzing the epochal significance and craft value of the Institute in response to national policies across various periods from the perspectives of industrial development, talent cultivation, and cultural promotion.
