Crazy for Bach 24 [Bach Talk]
Bach Walking with God

"The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." — J. S. Bach

In November 2025, the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV) officially added two new numbers, BWV 1178 and BWV 1179. This means that the total number of known Bach works has reached 1,179, with more than half of them created for church services. Such a vast collection, however, is a realm that Taiwanese music lovers seldom explore, largely due to the following reasons:

1. Massive Quantity: Whether it be church cantatas or organ and chorale preludes, the sheer volume creates an inherent challenge that leaves music lovers unsure of where to start.

2. Religious Barrier: Music written for church services, due to its religious purpose, creates a barrier for music lovers who are not of the Christian faith.

3. Language Barrier: Aside from organ music, most church service music is composed in German or Latin, creating a natural obstacle that makes it difficult for music lovers to connect with.

In this lecture, I will attempt to summarize and organize the background of the compositions, religious aspects, and musical characteristics. Through sharing selected musical excerpts, I hope to make Bach's church music—which walks with God—no longer feel aloof or unreachable.
