Degree Zero of Restoration: Traditional Architectural Wood Painting and Low-Carbon Restoration Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-04-12 Organizer: (中華民國)文化部文化資產局
Focusing on traditional Taiwanese architectural wood painting, this exhibition presents new possibilities for cultural preservation and sustainable development, from practical work at restoration sites to the development of scientific restoration materials.
In our familiar life scenes, there are old houses, monuments, and historical buildings carrying the traces of time. The wood paintings carefully created by craftsmen are full of details that invite long gazes, serving as a collection of faith, skills, and local memories. However, over time, sacrificial smoke, humidity, and dust can cause degradation. In the past, cleaning during wood painting restoration mostly relied on highly volatile organic solvents; while effective, these could pose long-term burdens on humans and the environment.
The exhibition follows the restorer's perspective, presenting the complete journey from the laboratory to on-site restoration. The exhibition features selected old wood painting pieces from religious buildings and private residences, such as mid-19th century cloud-patterned beams from temples and 1920s architectural components from the Chen Residence (陳宅) in Jiali District, Tainan. These include lintel paintings themed with cigarettes and teapots, phoenix bracket sets, and three-dimensional floral arches, allowing visitors to observe degradation states like pigment peeling, exposed knots, insect damage, and moisture up close.
Located in Tainan, the Baxie-jing Dongmen Daren Temple (八協境東門大人廟) mainly worships Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) and three generations of his family. The temple contains many precious cultural assets, such as murals by master Cai Cao-ru (蔡草如), the "Yao Zhan Jiu Er" (爻占九二) plaque presented by the Grand Matsu Temple (大天后宮), and a rare spider-web-shaped caisson. The door god paintings were created by the Chunyuan Art Studio (春源畫室), an important temple painting family that nurtured the national treasure-level master Pan Li-shui (潘麗水).

The exhibition reproduces the on-site restoration of Daren Temple, displaying various tools and notes used at the site. From scientific testing and consolidation to cleaning with ionic liquids, every step is meticulous, allowing visitors to observe the restorers' delicate handling of materials, techniques, and intervention scales.
