Why is the horse included in the 12 zodiac signs? The 'Horse', ranked seventh, held a crucial position in ancient agriculture and military affairs as one of the 'Six Domestic Animals'. Therefore, in traditional culture, the horse often symbolizes leaping, bravery, and nobility, aligning with the principle of selecting animals closely related to human life for the zodiac. Thus, ink wash paintings and crafts throughout history have often used the horse as a theme to interpret the imagery of power, speed, auspiciousness, and freedom.
In coordination with the 2026 'Year of the Horse', the museum has planned an exhibition of themed artifacts from the collection or contemporary creations:
Speculated to be the 'Rescuing A-Dou at the River' scene from the traditional Three Kingdoms opera 'Returning to Jingzhou'.
'Top Scholar Passing the Imperial Exam' bed decoration, depicting a scholar riding a horse leading a procession with gongs to report the good news, greeted by relatives.
Rush weaving creations 'Going to War' and '12 Zodiac Signs - Horse' by Teacher Lin Huang-chiao (preserver of Taitung rush weaving techniques).
