Ink Shadows and Profuse Flowers: Huang Kuo-shu (黃國書) Calligraphy Art Exhibition (墨影繁花-黃國書.書法藝術展)

Date: 2026-02-26 — 2026-03-27 Organizer: (中華民國)黃國書
At the time of the Lunar New Year and the beginning of the new semester, the spring breeze brings warmth and welcomes the season of blooming flowers. The National Chung Hsing University (國立中興大學) Art Center's first exhibition of 2026 invites Taiwanese calligraphy artist and alumnus Huang Kuo-shu (黃國書) to hold the "Ink Shadows and Profuse Flowers: Huang Kuo-shu Calligraphy Art Exhibition" at the university, with the exhibition period from February 26 (Thu) to March 27 (Fri). This exhibition features over 70 modern calligraphy creations by alumnus Huang Kuo-shu, dedicated to writing beautiful images of the human world, extracting famous passages and beautiful lines from ancient and modern Chinese and foreign poems, songs, and proverbs, laying out the script, and adorning them with ink shadows and flower fragments. It breaks through the framework of traditional calligraphy work forms and styles, integrates contemporary visual art expression, and adds a unique visual beauty to the composition of the works in terms of text reading and color changes, playing a vigorous and colorful chapter of joy.

Huang Kuo-shu (黃國書) was born in 1964 in Lugu Township, Nantou County, and graduated from Taichung First Senior High School, Taipei National University of the Arts, and the Graduate Institute of International Politics at National Chung Hsing University. In 2016, he was awarded the 20th Distinguished Alumnus of NCHU. He currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the NCHU Alumni Association and President of the Rotary Club of Taichung Xitun. He has served five terms as a Taichung City Councilor and three terms as a Legislator, and was selected eight times by the Citizen Congress Watch as an outstanding legislator for the Education and Culture Committee, with remarkable political achievements. Beyond political affairs, his artistic accomplishments are also high; he showed literary and artistic talent under family guidance from a young age, and his calligraphy won numerous awards during his schooling, stimulating his interest in the path of calligraphy. Later, he entered the Taipei National University of the Arts and was taught by contemporary masters, with both his vision and skill advancing together. During his time in politics, he still practiced calligraphy diligently and never stopped writing. He has been invited to hold solo calligraphy exhibitions at cultural venues such as the Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center (大墩文化中心), the Legislative Yuan, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (國父紀念館), National United University, National Chung Hsing University, the National Public Information Library, and Taichung Veterans General Hospital.

This time, alumnus Huang Kuo-shu uses "Ink Shadows and Profuse Flowers" (墨影繁花) as the exhibition theme, hoping that, as described in the poem by Zhu Xi (朱熹) of the Song Dynasty, "casually recognizing the face of the East Wind, thousands of purples and reds are always spring," the wonderful "East Wind" will bring vibrant spring flowers. He searches for creative elements from classical poetry and songs, transforming them into rich text images and colors under his brush, showing amazing charm and vitality, bringing warmth and hope to human relationships in the world, while decorating the happy atmosphere of the Lunar New Year festival. He incorporates traditional Taiwanese festive auspicious phrases such as "Heart Blossoms" (〈心花開〉), "Good Year" (〈好年冬〉), and "Great Wealth" (〈大富貴〉) into the bustling bloom of flowers. Aesthetics are paramount, poetic hearts are included, and the heart-touching works are dazzling, allowing viewers to feel the splendor of the bloom and wash away worldly thoughts.

The success of form and content depends on a solid calligraphy foundation. Alumnus Huang Kuo-shu's works cover all scripts, based on traditional stele and rubbing skills, exploring the possibilities of diverse styles, allowing "calligraphy" to become a form of visual art expression in addition to being a literary carrier, writing out the humanistic character of the author's calligraphy art, and revealing his care for local history. Just as many literati and ink guests in history have left countless moving poems of blooming scenery, often expressing elegant feelings and using scenes to express ambitions, the blooming spring scenes and the state of all things recovering they describe are always inspiring. Everyone is welcome to visit the exhibition hall to appreciate the charm of his brushstrokes, how they sweep across the sky and spread across the earth, showing vibrant and colorful hues.
