A body found on a riverbank opens a mysterious case. The police follow the clues, pointing the suspicion towards the victim's ex-wife, Yasuko Hanaoka (花岡靖子), and her daughter, Misato Hanaoka (花岡美里), but they are never able to piece together the truth of the event. The detective in charge of the case, Shunpei Kusanagi (草薙俊平), seeks help from his old friend, Manabu Yukawa (湯川學), an associate professor of physics. Unexpectedly, this leads to a reunion between Yukawa and his classmate, the mathematical genius Tetsuya Ishigami (石神哲哉), whom he hasn't seen for years.

Ishigami was Yukawa's only kindred spirit during their university days; he has a near-obsessive fascination with mathematics and an extraordinary sense of rationality. But when Yukawa realizes Ishigami's connection to the case, as he unravels the layers, the truth gradually surfaces—to protect the Hanaoka mother and daughter, Ishigami used meticulous logic to set up a series of layouts, even risking his own future as a bet.

At the boundary where rationality and emotion intersect, in this challenge set by Ishigami, there remains an unknown variable beyond mathematical logic: the deepest, unspoken emotions of the human heart.
