Katsushika Hokusai, known as the "Painting Madman," lives and paints with his daughter O-Ei (阿榮), who is also a Ukiyo-e artist. Their messy home is full of discarded sketches, and along with his apprentice Zenjiro and a dog, life is simple but lively. The Ukiyo-e artist's brush skillfully depicts the joys and sorrows of Edo: whether it's Ryogoku Bridge, Yoshiwara, fires, or legends of yokai. O-Ei, who is not good at romance, always feels helpless regarding her sick sister O-Nao (阿猶), yet she never gives up painting. As the season for the crape myrtle (Sarusuberi) to bloom again arrives, a storm is quietly approaching...
