Orchestra Horizontal and Vertical — Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras
Observing the New Era of Conductors for Global Top-tier Orchestras
In the past twenty years, the conductor landscape of international first-line symphony orchestras has changed rapidly: generational shifts, transformations in tonal aesthetics, introduction of technology and cross-disciplinary thinking, and different directions of European and American orchestra cultures have jointly promoted the restructuring of the classical music ecosystem. From Berlin to Los Angeles, from Paris to Amsterdam, major orchestras are undergoing long-term and deep adjustments due to the arrival of new conductors.
This series of lectures is presented by senior music commentator Teacher Lin Jen-pin (林仁斌), titled "Orchestra Horizontal and Vertical — Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras," focusing on five of the most representative international conductors in recent years: "Salonen (沙隆年), Dudamel (杜達美), Mäkelä (麥凱萊), Shani (沙尼), and Petrenko (佩特連科)." By combining musical background, sonic concepts, orchestra culture, repertoire planning, and rehearsal traditions, he leads the audience to understand the core issues of 21st-century conductor and orchestra development.
Discussing Conductors, Observing Orchestras, Understanding the New Face of Classical Music
This series of courses will compare the tonal styles of major orchestras, the artistic orientations of conductors, and the direction of concert curation, and observe their influence on the international music environment. If you follow classical music and orchestra trends, you should not miss it.
Lecture 5
Petrenko (佩特連科) and the Berlin Philharmonic (柏林愛樂): Aspects of 21st Century New Sounds
Orchestra Trends in the Post-Rattle (拉圖) Era
Since Petrenko (佩特連科) took office, he has gradually shaped the Berlin Philharmonic's (柏林愛樂) more modern performance effects through delicate, focused, and highly organized rehearsal methods. This lecture will analyze the differences in orchestra style between him and his predecessor Rattle (拉圖) from the aspects of repertoire planning, tonal balance, and rehearsal culture, and discuss how the Berlin Philharmonic (柏林愛樂), since the post-pandemic era, continues to be a leader, presenting the sound of the world's most representative top orchestra.
