Orchestral Horizons: Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras
Observing the New Era of Conductors for Global Top-tier Orchestras
In the past twenty years, the conducting landscape of international top-tier symphony orchestras has changed rapidly: generational shifts, transformations in tonal aesthetics, the introduction of technology and cross-boundary thinking, and the differing directions of European and American orchestral cultures have jointly pushed for a restructuring of the classical music ecosystem. From Berlin to Los Angeles, Paris to Amsterdam, major orchestras are undergoing long-term and deep adjustments due to the arrival of new conductors.
This lecture series is hosted by senior music commentator Mr. Jen-pin Lin, titled "Orchestral Horizons: Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras." It features five of the most representative international conductors in recent years: "Salonen, Dudamel, Mäkelä, Shani, and Petrenko," approaching from multiple angles including musical background, sound concepts, orchestral culture, repertoire planning, and rehearsal traditions, leading the audience to understand the core issues of 21st-century conductor and orchestra development.
Talking about Conductors, Observing Orchestras, Understanding the New Face of Classical Music
This series of courses will compare the tonal styles of major orchestras, the artistic orientations of conductors, and the direction of concert curation, and observe their impact on the international music environment. If you follow classical music and orchestral dynamics, you cannot miss it.
Lecture One
Salonen's Twin Cities Project: Musical Collaboration between Los Angeles and Paris
The Intersection of Classical Music and Modern Innovation
Salonen established an orchestral model at the Los Angeles Philharmonic centered on technology, creation, and an experimental spirit, introducing the composer's perspective and cross-disciplinary collaboration into programming. He continues this direction with the Orchestre de Paris, combining European tradition with more forward-looking planning, making the orchestra an important base for innovative music and contemporary repertoire experimentation.
This lecture will compare the orchestral cultures of the two cities, analyze Salonen's conducting philosophy, tonal orientation, and collaboration strategies, and explore its profound impact on the promotion of 21st-century music.
