Across the Orchestra — Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras
Observing a New Era for Global First-Tier Orchestra Conductors
Over the past twenty years, the conducting landscape of international first-tier symphony orchestras has shifted rapidly: generational replacement, changes in tonal aesthetics, the introduction of technology and cross-border thinking, and the different directions of European and American orchestra cultures have jointly driven the restructuring of the classical music ecosystem. From Berlin to Los Angeles, Paris to Amsterdam, major orchestras are undergoing long-term and deep adjustments due to the arrival of new conductors.
This series of lectures is hosted by senior music guide Lin Ren-bin. Titled 'Across the Orchestra — Discussing the New Landscape of 21st Century Classical Music and Orchestras', it selects five of the most representative international conductors in recent years: Salonen, Dudamel, Mäkelä, Shani, and Petrenko. Combining musical background, sound concepts, orchestra culture, repertoire planning, and rehearsal traditions, it leads the audience to understand the core issues of 21st-century conductors and orchestra development.
Talking about Conductors, Watching Orchestras, Understanding the New Face of Classical Music
This series of courses will compare the tonal styles, artistic orientations, and concert curation of major orchestras, and observe their impact on the international music environment. If you follow classical music and orchestra dynamics, you cannot miss it.
Third Lecture
The Rise of Mäkelä: Choices and Expectations of Three Major European Orchestras
The Triangular Musical Aesthetics of Paris, Amsterdam, and Chicago
The rising Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä has attracted global attention in a short time. The French sound of the Orchestre de Paris, the deep tradition of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, and the power aesthetics of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provide him with three distinct artistic environments.
This lecture will compare the history, organizational operation, and tonal characteristics of these three orchestras, analyze how Mäkelä establishes his own position within them, and explore the symbolic significance and future direction of his rapid rise for the European and American music worlds.
