"Naturally: Mountain and Sea Life of Fisherman's Island" Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-03-30 Organizer: (中華民國)王秀茹
Penghu, an archipelago surrounded by the sea, where the rhythm of islanders' lives is pulled by the tides, and the posture of labor carves memories of mountains and sea. Artist Wang Xiu-ru has conducted long-term field research, entering Chenggong Village and Xiaochi Village in Huxi Township, Penghu. Through residency, interviews, and workshops leading residents in creation, she transforms the vitality of "going to the mountains and the sea" in island daily life into artistic creation. This exhibition "Naturally: Mountain and Sea Life of Fisherman's Island" explores how the natural environment and climate shape farming methods, marine fishing culture, and human character. On the island where the sea breeze blows and rain is scarce, residents constructed the "Caizhai" (walled vegetable gardens) planting culture; between the alternating tides and ocean currents, traditional fishing techniques such as shell-stabbing, mantis shrimp catching, eel-luring, and night-light fishing were nurtured. Natural environmental conditions and lifestyles have shaped the resilient, flexible, and nature-close characteristics of Penghu people.
