Over-firing (Die Shao 疊燒) - Mountain City Series

The massive earthquake on September 21, 1999, led people from destruction to reconstruction, making one realize the impermanence and resilience of life. New hope sprouts in the ruins, and new order and power are found in the fractures. Continuing the "Kiln Sculpture" (窯塑) creations from 2016-2020, breakage and reorganization have become important vocabularies. In 2023, the "Over-firing" (疊燒) technique was used for repeated stacking and firing, symbolizing the layering of time and the continuous renewal and transformation of life. Through artistic practice, it responds to the land while achieving healing. By recreating works damaged by the earthquake, it gives new life to [pottery]; thus, the precipitation and reconstruction of memory sublimate the emotion and thickness of time.
