Permanent Exhibition of the Fault Trench Preservation Hall (斷層槽溝保存館)

The 921 Earthquake was one of the earthquakes that caused serious disasters to Taiwan in recent years. It occurred on September 21, 1999, hence it is called the 921 Earthquake. Its epicenter was located in Jiji (集集) Town, so it is also known as the Jiji Earthquake. The main cause of this earthquake was the re-slipping of the Chelungpu Fault (車籠埔斷層). Therefore, in order to understand the past slipping records of the fault, geologists began related research.
A trench is the most direct way to study paleoseismic records. Geological phenomena caused by past activities may be preserved in the strata. The Zhushan Trench (竹山槽溝) was preserved because it contains relatively complete paleoseismic records.
The Fault Trench Preservation Hall (斷層槽溝保存館) is a semi-spherical special building with an appearance like a Little Giant Dome. This feature comes from the design concept of "The sky is round and the earth is square." The main function is to maintain the scientific research site and display the precious Chelungpu Fault trench. Entering the preservation hall and walking on the skybridge set up inside to watch the fault section at close range allows visitors to experience the immense power of nature and relearn how to coexist with nature.
The Fault Trench Preservation Hall underwent renovation from September 1, 2023, to August 2, 2024, and reconstructed the viewing platform. The new platform provides a more spacious visiting area, allowing the audience to get closer to the geological phenomena in the trench. By observing the fault section truly showing the stratigraphic destruction produced by the earthquake, one can understand Taiwan's inevitable earthquake destiny.
