Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) Archaeological Artifacts Permanent Exhibition - Hall 3 (南科考古文物常設展-第三展廳)
How do archaeologists deduce past human life and culture from broken and small prehistoric remains?
Through observations of naturally deposited soil strata and cultural layers left by human activities, archaeologists are able to establish temporal relationships within a site; spatial relationships are mapped through the recording of planar phenomena; analysis of animal and plant remains excavated from the site provides information about the natural environment at the time; test results of pottery, stone tools, metalware, glassware, and other objects reflect the craftsmanship and trade networks of the ancestors, while the study of human bones from burials reveals information about their physical characteristics, diet, diseases, customs, and so on.
Relying on modern scientific analysis techniques, research conducted on excavated objects is one of the main differences between archaeology and history. In Hall 3, the boundary walls, phenomenon specimens, animal bones and plant seeds, and human bone facial reconstruction models actually brought back from archaeological excavation sites will be used to introduce the techniques applied in these research tasks and their results.
