"Splendor of Wu, Needles from Jiangnan" (吳地風華・針起江南) — Mr. Gao Ying-shi's Embroidery Collection Exhibition
About this exhibition
There is a saying that "the devil is in the details." For Suzhou embroidery (Su embroidery) art, known for being "fine, elegant, and refined," this is undoubtedly the best footnote. Suzhou embroidery art is said to have originated in the Spring and Autumn period and is one of the four famous embroideries in China, world-renowned for its lifelike techniques. The pursuit of ultimate realism in Suzhou embroidery perfectly matches the collection preferences of founder Gao Ying-shi. Since thirty years ago, he has continued to purchase and collect fine Suzhou embroidery works, and to date, he has accumulated over a hundred pieces of various sizes. This exhibition is based on these dazzling masterpieces, selecting over forty exquisite items to present to the public.
Suzhou embroidery art is part of the craft of embroidery, and embroidery is part of Chinese culture. Within these countless connections, the Chang Hsing Art Museum (長興美術館) hopes to explore the subtleties of the embroidery world with the audience. Therefore, this exhibition has contacted embroidery workshops and consulted with embroidery workers. While organizing the embroidery works, it also gathered industrial information, striving to present a more comprehensive exhibition content to visitors and hoping to provide the audience with a clearer outline of the art of embroidery.
The 2020 "Treasured and Exquisite Embroidery" special exhibition brought countless positive feedback to the Chang Hsing Art Museum. Since embroidery is a relatively fragile art form compared to other types of artworks and is not suitable for long-term display, after five years of preparation, the museum has once again taken this theme to carefully organize classic Suzhou embroidery collections for the audience. The theme of this exhibition can be divided into four major areas: "Source of Splendid Embroidery," "Needle and Thread Life," "Beauty Passed Down through Generations," and "Learning Space." In addition to its rich artistic quality, it also provides industrial and cultural information, hoping that the audience can gain rewards and enjoyment from this exhibition.
