Syongjhen North Gate (雄鎮北門) Permanent Exhibition
Since its completion in 1876, Syongjhen North Gate (雄鎮北門) has undergone various uses, including military, a leisure spot for Railway Bureau employees, Kaohsiung Port authority work, and a signal tower. It was a pity that the outline of the monument was hidden among privately occupied buildings and abandoned dormitories. Since 2004, the Kaohsiung City Government has made efforts to communicate and coordinate, successively demolishing buildings around the monument that were incompatible with the landscape. Until 2016, with funding support from the Ministry of Culture for the Xingbin Project (興濱計畫), the opportunity for the monument's restoration project finally arrived, and it was reopened to the outside world at the end of 2021.
Due to the particularly rigorous historical research on the appearance of the battery by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government during the entire restoration process, which focused on restoring the "North and South Barracks Miller Beams" and "Triple-Soil Roof Structure," the public can directly feel the spatial atmosphere of the Syongjhen North Gate Qing Dynasty barracks upon entering this space.
Syongjhen North Gate's unique geographical location is not only the best place to watch large ships entering the port and the sunset at Sizihwan (西子灣), but the unique historical space of the North and South Barracks is also planned for historical themed displays, hoping that the monument will become aesthetic nourishment and a cultural landmark that citizens can take pride in in their daily lives.
