The Power of a Juren (舉人): Lanyang (蘭陽) First Juren's Hundred-Year Mansion Permanent Exhibition
Huang Zuan-xu (黃纘緒) — the first Juren (舉人) in Yilan (宜蘭) history, who used his life to write the story of "achieving others."
Walking into the Huang Juren Mansion (黃舉人宅) is not just stepping into a century-old house, but walking into a deeply rooted life trajectory. Here is his former residence and the only existing Juren mansion in Yilan (宜蘭). The exhibition tells the story from his hard study in a poor family and passing the imperial examination to his return home to join local construction. Huang Zuan-xu managed water canals, advocated for the construction of temples, and promoted Beiguan (北管) culture. He transformed his personal fame into light that illuminates the neighborhood, truly practicing the literati value of "the gentleman helps others to achieve their goals."
The exhibition is themed "The Power of a Juren" (舉人之力). From the main hall furniture and calligraphy craftsmanship to the imperial examination system and Beiguan (北管) opera, through scene reconstruction and interactive experiences, it leads you through the layers of tests of the Qing Dynasty imperial examination, feeling how Huang Zuan-xu (黃纘緒) stood out with perseverance and faith, and transformed knowledge and character into the power to help others.
Today's Huang Juren Mansion is not only a courtyard house (三合院) but also an inspiration base about responsibility, kindness, and influence. We sincerely invite you to step into history, waiting for you to light up the next story of kindness.
