The Year of Eighty (杖朝之年) - Wu Tung-sheng (吳東昇) Calligraphy, Painting, and Seal Carving Exhibition
At the age of 80, Mr. Wu Tung-sheng (吳東昇), as a grassroots practitioner, adheres to his artistic heart and holds his first solo exhibition in Taichung. With fifty years of unceasing brushwork, he inherits the tradition of ink painting, merging calligraphy, painting, and seal carving into one source, refining an artistic style that combines strength and softness with a unique charm. Welcoming the 2026 Bingshu Year of the Horse, Mr. Wu takes "Horse" and "Seal Carving" as his themes, exhibiting steeds either galloping and leaping or standing and gazing. The ink tones blend lightness and heaviness, and the brushwork is bold and unrestrained, being both majestic and spirited. The square inch seals are like the soul of a painting, with the knife following the heart and the force penetrating the seal's bone, containing both the ancient and the modern within a small space; steadiness is seen within vigor, and spiritual thoughts appear within simplicity, allowing the charm of traditional seal carving and modern aesthetics to reflect each other. Art requires innovation; Wu Tung-sheng's professionalism and persistence in art are worthy of being passed down through generations.
