"Unboxing Daxi" (開箱大溪) Permanent Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-12-31 Organizer: (中華民國)桃園市立大溪木藝生態博物館
"Unboxing Daxi" (開箱大溪) explores how Daxi developed and how the people of Daxi managed their community. Through the perspectives of individuals, families, and various organizations over the past century, it leads visitors to gradually understand the stories of the land and its people. Daxi is a museum that performs life in its actual environment; walking into Daxi is walking into a museum.

Since the Qing Dynasty, Daxi's geographical advantage as an important inland river port on the Dahan River (大漢溪) made it a major cargo distribution center and part of the international trade network, creating the earliest bustling market streets in the Taoyuan area. For over a century, the street culture has accumulated a rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The Daxi History Gallery (大溪歷史館) opened in 2016, leading visitors through Daxi's industries, social customs, and the lives and history of its people. In 2023, the exhibition was fully updated to incorporate years of accumulated research results, combining local resources and new media techniques to unbox the diverse facets of Daxi.

The exhibition is divided into 6 major themes: "Originating from Dahan River," "Rooting and Expansion," "Joyfully Serving Daxi," "Promoting Daxi Woodwork," "Co-creation and Co-management," and "Daxi People Telling Stories." Highlights include exhibition designs using "mechanical wood devices combined with projection," "interactive touch walls," and "situational projections." It features 6 video documentaries, 5 realistic models, 11 physical and multimedia interactive devices, and 6 situational displays. These present Daxi's rich documents and old photographs in an all-age inclusive way, making complex history accessible. The venue also offers various interactive teaching aids for experiencing wood knowledge and solid wood chairs made by Daxi wood artisans for the public to try.
