Chuan-er 10th Anniversary Brand New Remake: Returning to the Temple Courtyard Stage——
【10th Anniversary Brand New Remake, Stage Reopening to Reproduce the Classic】
The original work "Chuan-er," which blends Taiwanese Opera and musical narrative, is about to make a heavyweight return in a brand-new version! This classic piece that has moved countless audiences will be remade and upgraded for its tenth anniversary. Combining Taiwan's elite theater production team, local temple courtyard cultural background, and a deeply moving cross-temporal love theme, it brings a shocking performance of intertwined emotion and culture to the Taiwanese audience.
Premiering in 2015, "Chuan-er" was widely acclaimed for its delicate and moving plot and unique "play-within-a-play" narrative technique. Ten years later, this version not only upgrades the script, music, design, and pacing but also further deepens the emotional layers and richness of theatrical language, reconstructing the tension and beauty between traditional and contemporary expression. The classic aria "Riding a White Horse" is reinterpreted in the new version, using a dialogue between pop and Taiwanese Opera singing styles to sing of persistent love that spans time and space.
【Golden Lineup Gathers to Create a Creative Peak】
The new version of "Chuan-er" is jointly created by the production team of "The Three Sisters of Tiawan"—Director Tseng Hui-cheng, known for his delicate staging, joins forces with Lee Che-yi, Kang He-xiang, and Liang Yue-ling once again. They blend traditional and modern musical languages to create a brand-new sonic space; meanwhile, the design team also starts from temple courtyard culture, integrating local Taiwanese life textures and folk beliefs into the scene visuals, making the performance feel as if it is truly happening on a street corner stage right beside the audience.
【A Love Transcending Time, Space, Life, and Death; Meeting Again in Song】
"Chuan-er" is a work that integrates traditional Taiwanese Opera with contemporary musical theater narrative. The story tells of the emotional bond between a young man in an opera troupe, A-qiang, and a mysterious girl, Chuan-er, transcending time and space. Through the play-within-a-play structure of the Taiwanese Opera "Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan," and the intersection of memory and reality, it explores themes of opera inheritance, love, and commitment.
The story unfolds in a lively temple courtyard: as night falls, the troupe prepares to perform. A-qiang, a young man in the troupe who is becoming disillusioned with Taiwanese Opera, unexpectedly finds a script that has been sealed for many years. A mysterious girl, Chuan-er, quietly appears. The singing and movements on stage seem to evoke forgotten vows and unfinished stories.
As the performances continue one by one, the relationship between the two grows closer, yet there is always a hint of uneasy suspense. Members of the troupe begin to notice A-qiang's abnormality... When the sounds of the play slowly dissipate, what will the true answer be? A promise that spans life and death, shining with a sliver of light, leads everyone to find the truth within the mystery...
【Local Culture Enters the Play; the Temple Courtyard is Our Theater】
The story of "Chuan-er" leads the audience into the daily life of a traditional opera troupe; this is not just the reboot of a play, but a cultural look back belonging to the land and people of Taiwan. The performance features temple entrances, incense, and street scenes, interweaving the state of common life with the aesthetics of faith; the work directly explores the issues of struggle and transformation of traditional opera troupes in the contemporary era, while also showing respect to temple courtyard culture.
