Western Romance, Made in Taiwan (臺灣製造)—The Story of Taiwan's Decorative Porcelain Doll Industry in the 1970s

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-12-31 Organizer: (中華民國)國立台灣工藝研究發展中心苗栗工藝產業研發分館
The 1970s were an era of emerging global trends. The post-war baby boomers, born between 1945-1965, are currently the largest generation with over 200 million people worldwide. In the 1970s, the American baby boomer population drove the growth of toys, cartoons, and pop music. The prosperity of the toy industry naturally boosted the decorative porcelain industry. From early stages of accepting orders for factories through the Japanese and learning doll-making techniques, to eventually designing prototypes and mass-producing independently, the process went from setbacks to success. Looking back, "Made in Taiwan" became the world's production center. This former Taiwanese spirit is filled with confidence, pride, and glorious achievement.
Decorative porcelain evolves from 2D graphic design to 3D physical prototypes. In artistic expression, it integrates skills such as painting, sculpture, coloring, and firing, showcasing a magnificent 3D aesthetic that represents traditional beliefs, local culture, life observation, and personal artistic cultivation. Porcelain dolls produced in the Miaoli (苗栗) area were mainly supplied to foreign markets, including the US, Canada, Germany, and the UK. Therefore, they differ from traditional Taiwanese industries in technical craft and stylistic presentation. The sparks of innovation between Eastern and Western ceramic techniques influenced the future development of Taiwan's ceramic industry. After the pioneering period in the 1960s and rapid development in the 1970s, the 1980s became the golden era focused on exports, earning Taiwan the reputation of the "Kingdom of Decorative Porcelain."
"Made in Taiwan" witnessed the romance of Western life in the 1970s. Every porcelain doll has its own story, as does every person or family who collects them. As labor patterns changed and demand decreased, the glory of Taiwan's decorative porcelain industry gradually faded. However, it witnessed the era of Taiwan's economic takeoff, exchanging hard work for a beautiful encounter between Taiwanese manufacturing and Western romance.
