White Eagle in the Clouds—Mountain Hawk-Eagle (熊鷹) Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-12-19 Organizer: (中華民國)台灣猛禽研究會
The Mountain Hawk-Eagle (熊鷹) is one of Taiwan's most robust resident raptors. It is very rare to see in the wild and is an endangered protected wildlife species. This special exhibition features Mountain Hawk-Eagle specimens borrowed from the Biodiversity Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, allowing everyone to observe the raptor's sharp beak and powerful talons up close.
Although specimens must be properly preserved and cannot be touched, the exhibition has prepared more "hands-on" surprises:
- 1:1 scale 3D printed Mountain Hawk-Eagle talon models
- Experience the size and strength of a raptor's claws first-hand
- Custom kettlebells weighted equally to an adult Reeve's Muntjac (山羌) (with a little tail!)
According to research records from Yushan (玉山) National Park over the past six years, Mountain Hawk-Eagles in the southern park area often prey on large animals like muntjacs. Despite weighing less than 3kg, these eagles can use air currents to carry prey weighing over 6kg back to their nests! Visitors can lift the "Muntjac Kettlebell" to feel their amazing strength and flight capability.
The exhibition covers the eagle's appearance, naming origins, nesting monitoring, activity patterns, dietary research, and symbolic significance in Indigenous cultures. it combines research results from Sun Yuan-hsun's team at Pingtung University of Science and Technology since 2019 in Yushan (玉山) National Park, along with precious footage captured by director Liang Chieh-te.
